Best Things To Do in Port Douglas with Kids

Lazing by the pool, book in one hand, cocktail in the other. No sound but the cicadas chirping… Um, if you’re travelling with kids, it’s time to wake up now! Luckily, you have chosen your destination wisely. In Port Douglas there are heaps of things to do that will keep little ones entertained, and you might just find yourself having fun, too.

In the water

At Freestyle Resort we have won awards for our pool! Set in tropical gardens, it has plenty of room to play, and shallow areas for little ones to enjoy a splash. Head down to the beach and you’ll find the patrolled swimming area in front of Port Douglas Surf Life Saving HQ. If shrieking is music to your ears, take the kids to the water park at nearby Glengarry. Bag a family day pass and enjoy the bouncy cushion, pool, six watersides and large tipping bucket.

On the water

Within just a few hundred meters of Port Douglas’ Crystalbrook Marina are the beautifully unspoilt mangrove channels known as Dickson Inlet. Taking a boat trip is a wonderful way to while away the hours, spotting estuarine birdlife, dropping in a fishing line and steering clear of the odd sunbaking croc. Take it all in on a calm water cruise aboard the Lady Douglas, or hire a flat-bottomed pontoon and be your own tour guide. No licence required for hire boats, so just listen to the instructions, and away you sail.

Out and about

Getting on two wheels is a great way to explore our friendly town, and the port Douglas Bike Hire has bikes of all sizes to suit the whole family, plus tandems and baby seats. Take a ride through the back streets, hunting down the best snacks and souvenirs, or pedal along the flat sands of Four Mile Beach.

Wildlife

Who doesn’t love our native wildlife? At Wildlife Habitat, it’s a hands-on affair, where you can feed the wallabies and kangaroos, have a parrot climb on your shoulder, watch a gi-normous croc leap from his lake, and pose for photos with pythons and koalas. This award-winning eco attraction is just a hop and a skip from Freestyle Resort. If you have a budding croc wrangler in the family, it’s well worth the 30-minute drive south to Hartley’s Crocodile Adventures. More than 4000 crocs call this huge park home – some of them relocated after misbehaving in local residential areas. Take a lagoon cruise, walk the wildlife trail and watch from a safe distance at feeding time.

Ice cream

The perfect end to any adventure is ice cream. (It’s pretty handy as a bribe, too!) And in Port Douglas we have some of the best. At Wicked on Macrossan Street, there’s a choice of more than 40 flavours from Bubblegum to Apple Pie. Further down the street is Capannina, where you’ll find delicious Italian gelati, plus a range of handmade pastries and excellent coffee for the grownups.
